On Sunday February 7th, ELAW staff and volunteers made their way across the river to Eugene’s Alton Baker Park to take part in the 14th annual Truffle Shuffle, whose proceeds will benefit Committed Partners for Youth/Big Brothers Big Sisters’s Bolder Options running program.
With a total of nineteen runners, joggers, and walkers participating in the event, ELAW clearly stood out as one of the largest nonprofit teams present at the event. Out of these, fourteen took part in the 2-mile run/walk, including ELAW’s Executive Director Bern Johnson, Associate Director Lori Maddox, and Information Technology Manager, Glenn Gillis, Program Associate, Chu Chen, along with their family and friends. Together, they won 2nd place on behalf of ELAW in the nonprofit team division.
For the daring few who were willing to sign up for it, ELAW’s volunteer intern Jake Abrahams led the way through the grueling 4-mile race. Despite our initial qualms, all of us, including Office Manager Lauren Ice, Carson Atkin (13-year old son of Lori Maddox), Josh Vincent and myself, made it through to the finish line in one piece, and ultimately took 1st place on behalf of ELAW in the nonprofit division for the 4-miler.
Staff Attorney Jen Gleason and Director of Philanthropy Rita Radostitz volunteered at the event to help with jobs like registration and event coordination. Rita’s daughters Hanna and Sabella handed out candy at the kids’ Fun Run.
The race itself could not have taken place on a more beautiful day. The sky was clear and the course was a flat, fast and scenic route that took us alongside the river. And though the run itself was initially a challenge, the cheers from the rest of the ELAW team and the decadent chocolate truffles on the other side of the finish line made the extra effort all the more worthwhile.
A special thank you goes out to all the staff, volunteers and friends of who took part in the event, including: David Atkin, Tyee Atkin, Yan Guo, Harper Johnson, Hilary Johnson, Tatum Johnson, Leela Mixer, Mathew Mixer, Yan Sang, Kiran Oomen, Caleb Oomen, Anil Oomen and Gitanjali Oomen.
